Woodpecker Golf Society |
10th Anniversary |
|
Some 10 years ago, a small group of golfers who regularly played in 2 or 3 groups discussed the possibility of forming a golf society, with the idea of arranging a few golf matches followed by dinner and a good ‘craic’.
In June 1999, thirteen members formed a society known only as the ‘No Name’ Golf Society and on Friday 16th July 1999 played their first event for the ‘Salver Trophy’, won by Mr. N. Preston.
Following that meeting, numerous society names were suggested eventually agreeing upon the title of ‘Woodpecker Golf Society’ with Mr. N. Barltrop acting as our first Captain.

After 40+ events including four Captain weekend tours, we continue to look at ways of enjoying the society. Therefore to mark our 10th Anniversary, we plan to hold a golfing ‘away day’ with the Salver Trophy meeting being played during the afternoon round.
The venue chosen is Frilford Heath Golf Club, Abingdon, Nr. Oxford OX13 5NW (approx. 1 hour by car). Frilford is a Heathland course formed in 1908, with 54 holes of golf. Full details are available on www.frilfordheath.co.uk
